The Home of Theatre that Dares to be Different
Director's Toolbox
The Craft of Directing isn't something that can be clearly defined -
there's no perfect checklist of all the things you have to do in order
to direct a successful play, and just because you've directed a play
in one manner for one company in one venue doesn't necessarily
mean that what worked before will work again under another set of
circumstances.  So be flexible, be creative, and always remember
this - you're supposed to be having fun!  If you are (and you're not
letting things get out of hand) then chances are the show you're
creating will be a success.  Here a few resources to help you out
(though I make no claims as to their value or objectivity!).

Here's an article of mine - written for teachers,
but it applies to anyone in community theatre
Found this - a bit of history of the director's craft

The Phaidon Theatre Manual - Directing a Play
- this was the first book on theatre directing
that I ever read and I've found it to be one of
most concise and valuable resources out there.
A bit tilted in towards the "Old British" ways
making theatre, but packed full of plenty of
simple, straightforward how-to advice.

These are just a few resources.  For directors
who are working on a Grinder show I have a
decent collection of books, many of which I'm
perfectly willing to let directors
borrow for a few
weeks.

More important than any resource though is
communication.  I strongly encourage
everyone who's directing with Grinder to keep
in constant touch with us here at head office.  I
will always make the time to listen to whatever
you have to say, answer your questions and if I
don't know what you should do in a given
situation I'll work with you and we'll find the
answer together.

The most important tool in the Director's
Toolbox is communication!

here just let me know and I'll include them in
